    Existing Small-Scale Power Producers

    Update on the Balancing Pool

On March 5, 2024, the Alberta Government issued Ministerial Order M.O. 040/2024 that amends the SSG Regulation by transferring the Balancing Pool’s accountabilities to the AESO. However, existing producers that have already been qualified as Small-Scale Power Producers (SSPs) and have entered into an executed agreement with the Balancing Pool will continue to be administered by the Balancing Pool until Oct. 1, 2024. The Balancing Pool will provide additional information to existing SSPs to facilitate a smooth transition.

    Dispatching Services

For SSPs generating 5MW or more and currently receiving dispatch services, the Balancing Pool’s dispatch services provider will keep providing it until Sept. 30, 2024. The AESO will be using the same dispatch services provider but will need to obtain new orders from the Alberta Utilities Commission to permit the necessary sharing of records. If you wish to continue receiving dispatch services beyond  Sept. 30, 2024, then please contact SSG@aeso.ca no later than  July 31, 2024, to initiate the process.

    Financial Settlement

If you are a SSP currently settling directly with the Balancing Pool, then please contact the AESO at SSG@aeso.ca to set up your account. If you already settle directly with the AESO, there will be no change and no further action is required, unless you need to update the contact information that you have on file with the AESO.
