Chapel Rock-to-Pincher Creek Transmission Development (7064)

With the evolving electricity landscape, the AESO has worked diligently to ensure the previously approved transmission development in southwest Alberta continues to be the right plan for the transmission system for all Albertans. Specifically, the need for this transmission development reinforcement was approved by the Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC) as part of the Southern Alberta Transmission Reinforcement Needs Identification Document (NID) on September 8, 2009. The NID, including all appendices, engagement material and amendments approved by the AUC are located in “Archived Materials” below.

The Chapel Rock–to–Pincher Creek Transmission Development project includes:

• Construction of the previously approved Chapel Rock substation will proceed.
• One new 240 kV transmission circuit will connect the new Chapel Rock substation to one of two existing substations – either Castle Rock Ridge or Goose Lake. Both substations present technically viable solutions. Based on additional work as part of the planning process, and taking stakeholder feedback into consideration, it was determined that a second 240 kV transmission line is not required within the next five-10 years and will remain as part of our long-term plans for the area.
