    Update | High Grid Congestion

The grid is experiencing high amounts of congestion today. This resulted in the simultaneous triggering of two processes leading to long-lead time (LLT) assets being directed online at the same time as the pool price was showing $0/MWh.

    The processes are:

    1. Under ID #2015-006R, paragraph 3 (under Section 302.1 – Real Time Transmission Constraint Management of the AESO’s rules), when units are dispatched higher in the merit order, to replace units that have been constrained, the System Marginal Price (SMP) is recalculated to estimate what the SMP would have been absent any congestion volumes. Today, that has resulted in SMPs that have largely been at $0/MWh.
    2. With the large amount of congested volume removed from the merit order, the forecasted supply cushion has been below the 932 MW threshold at times today. As per Section 206.2 – Interim Supply Cushion Directives in the AESO rules, when the forecasted supply cushion is expected below this threshold for any settlement interval, the AESO must direct an eligible LLT asset online to minimize the anticipated supply cushion deficit.
